On this part only, there dropped 90 bombs. On the edge of the port, where the canteen is, was a little cove with five or six boats. The pilots would drop a bomb wherever they saw wood. One bomb dropped on our house roof, made a hole like so, and did not explode. This was before the Nazi troops reached Sfakia. There were three New Zealanders with machine guns and held them for three days. There were about 6000 British troops here. There was an order to abandon their weapons, you should have seen that, from here to the main square, full of discarded guns, pistols, the works. We gathered them and when the Germans came, I would load them on my boat and throw them in the sea. I had a little garden here, I used some as poles for the fence. When the sea was up, the guns would get washed out on the sand. We stole some as kids and used to play with them. You had as many as you liked.
