The itinerary no.230 assigned to the rural postman of Sfakia encompasses the multifarious landscape of the area, with its gorges, villages, old cultivations of vines and wheat, olive trees, animal husbandry and bee keepings, as well as its inhabitants. From Chora Sfakion to Agia Roumeli and back twice a week, the rural postman was a reliable link to the outside world. The route is a connecting thread for the cultural heritage of the southern Sfakia region. The rural postman’s itinerary coded 230, followed a difficult path in the west od the Sfakia region. Three times per week , the postman had to walk 45 km with a 700 m difference in height from the plateau villages to the coast villages, crossing three gorges to bring the news to the most remote people. It’s about a circular route that connects a variety of landscapes, ecosystems et mountain and sea stories through time. A unique itinerary not only for the environnement but also for its cultural variety. Nowdays the acces is much more easy thanks to the facilities of our era.
